How did you find TMAN?: Just Surfed On In!
Comments: I am a practitioner of the martial arts with a varied background starting with Moo Duk Kwan, From James Roberts, Jr. in the D.C. area in '69-'70, (he was a third dan at 17 yrs old in '69,and was the top rated tournament competitor in Katas in the early 70's. I actually dated his sister who was a first dan in 7th grade) continuing with Roger Carpenter's school in Wichita, Ks. as well as competitive wrestling in high school, and jr golden gloves boxing in southern Cal with Bingham's Raiders, The #1 amateur team in early 70's. I have always thought that the serious martial artist needs to be versatile, and not limited to one style. I feel submissions are just as, if not more effective than knockout blows in a self defense situation where it is one on one but is obviously limiting in situations where there are several assailants. (I also ran the 100 and the 440 relay in high school which is sometimes the best defense of all!) Any views on the competitions such as the UFC etc? They are proving what I have known for years that grapplers have the distinct advantage in a one on one situation, but so what? If I can out run you or better still out shoot you then whats the point? Are these tournaments good for martial arts or do they lessen the truthfulness of the fact that a practitioner with the discipline, skill and training of say James could simply kill the assailant quickly. (James never believed in tournament sparring or full contact because it bypassed that point exactly. He never taught us to pull punches!) I think maybe it is adding a level of violence to the mainstream of our society that our children are being heavily influenced by. My point is driven home by a recent poll at an elementary school, when the children were asked who there favorite athlete was, the top two or three were WWF wrestlers! Steve Austin? who?

How did you find TMAN?: Just Surfed On In!
Comments: Hi I am relatively new to martial arts (I practiced Tai Kwon Do in high school for a couple of years but that is about it). I am interested in getting back into it. Do you have any suggestions on which style to practice first? Is one better than another (or just different)? Since there are so many styles out there from Muay Thai to Akido I was wondering if you could give me some direction. I have been leaning in the direction of Shotokan or general "kickboxing". My goals are to: incr flexibility (I am somewhat of a bodybuilder and have grown inflexible over the yrs) Self defense incr Discipline and control of the mind lastly, in general, become a badass Any insight you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Also, are there any good websites out there that explain / identify the benefits and strategies of each style? Thanks

Comments: Greetings!!! I wish to thank all the participants and Master R. Tromontano for inviting Pines Karate School at his tournament. All the students who went were happy to walk away with throphies in their hands, and victories in their hearts. We have learned alot from the experience also we have made new friends. P.S. Comments: Looking for a Martial Arts form that is for me. I recently took classes for two years at the Illinois Quest Center and decided that the form of Ninjitsu while very interesting and exciting was to passive for me. Currently I have left the school for the above reason, but also to let my knee heal. I hope to find something by January 1999 that I am interested in. I do not have an e-mail address that can be used, but if someone can mail me something I would appreciate it. Please mail to 1221 Cambia Dr. Apt. 1207 Schaumburg, Il 60193 Jackie Johnson

Comments: Hi there, I am the current national president of the American Teachers Association of America. (ATAMA) I am always looking for places and people that share the same interest in the martial arts that I have. I am a firm believer in sharring knowledge with other styles and disiplines. Just in the short time I have visited your site, I feel I could benefit, as well as share with others. I'm a little fed up with the so called "martial arts chat rooms" There is no respect, and the constant swearing, and name calling is not my idea of meeting people. So there, I've said it all. I am interested in becoming a member, I am about to go to that now.

Comments: Good luck on your website. New at martial arts and it's the toughest sport I've tried. Usually can beat people in other sports with out practicing. Now I know what discipline it takes.
